(Quiz lifted from All & Sundry, for the second year in a row–though she hasn’t posted hers yet this year.) Please copy/paste for yourself! If you do post this on your own blog, link to your entry in the comments here and we will all be best friends. If you don’t have a blog, you can [...]

My end-of-year gift to you is that I am NOT going to write a post about how today is the anniversary of my first date with Lieu two years ago, when he reached across the table and took my hand and I thought I would burst into flame. Last Christmas, he took me to the [...]

Me: You do not need liposuction. That’s INSANE. I thought you were kidding about this. Anonymous very thin male friend: No, I’m totally serious. I have a date planned for the procedure and everything. Me: I can’t talk to you about this unless you want to hear what I really think, and you’re not going to [...]

Updated to add my favorite things from last year: Christmas Cards for Single People Christmas Cards from Ex-Boyfriends I am going to be festive if it fucking kills me. I am planing so many holiday activities I don’t want to do, I will not have time to cry into my pillow before falling into bed alone [...]

I’m a little bit obsessed with flowers. I could spend a thousand years in a garden center, or strolling around looking at people’s yards. My photos from tropical vacations are disproportionately weighted toward close-up shots of weird flowers and obsessively shot bromeliads. I have seen birds of paradise growing in the wild, and it thrilled [...]

Because I like to excoriate myself whenever possible, I will start this post off with a shameful confession: I did not read one single paper book this year. I’m all digital, all the time. I didn’t even want my Kindle when I got it two years ago because I was so committed to the physicality [...]

I am visiting with my four-year-old cousin, Paige. She is a sunny child, with skin like cream and hair of such a pale red hue that it’s actually pink. She used to have blue eyes, and then last year they suddenly and definitively turned to smoky grey. Now her whole palette is muted, like a [...]

This post brought to you in honor of Guns’n’Roses being inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. I apologize in advance for the many earworms I am about to inflict upon my fellow Generation Xers. 1. 1988: New Kids on the Block and Tiffany at the Ohio State Fair. We waited in line [...]

My head is filled with mucus and sadness. I think there may be few things more poignant than a rainy Wednesday in December when you are sick and there is no one to make (or procure) soup for you. Beyond sex, beyond forming alliances, beyond raising healthy young, THIS is why people struggle so hard to find another person to love and live with. It’s all about the wild hope that someday, somewhere, when your head is heavy and your throat is filled with knives and your lungs ache, someone will show up in your home with spicy Asian noodle soup, the good kind of tissues with lotion, and some heavy-duty cough syrup and then let you lay your head in their lap after you have made use of these items. Wars have been fought for less worthy goals.

The thing that made the hair on the back of my neck stand up was when she asked about a specific plumbing problem I’ve been having, and chided me for planning to take care of it myself when it’s not my responsibility. My toilet has been leaking for weeks, and my landlords are not [...]
